Up above the smoke, where the cool kids at

February has been a pretty busy month for me, both professionally and personally. Here's a disjointed rundown of some things that have happened.

Toward the start of the month, I finished up my Oscars "Best Picture" review series for KVUE.com, which turned out to be more challenging than I expected (in a good way) and really enjoyable. Then on actual Oscars Night™, I got to work a shift entirely dedicated to covering the show, which is incredibly my jam. I even talked on camera a little bit and managed to not sound like a crazy person. Then about mid-month, KVUE hosted a debate with 11 out of the 12 Democratic candidates vying for the state's U.S. Senate nomination. It was a day I thought would be very stressful, but actually went pretty smoothly because everyone had assigned tasks. I livetweeted up a storm.

There's a lot coming up for work, too. I've been working on some prep work for Super Tuesday, which will be a very long, very stressful day – but like the debate, also one that makes me feel very proud of what I do. Working big political events is hard, but it's important. Then almost immediately after that, it's time for SXSW, one of the most overwhelming and fun events of the year. Last year, I got to really lean into my "KVUE's resident movie enthusiast" role and I'm hoping since I've done even more of that since, I'll get to focus on film again this year. But there are also a lot of cool speakers and events! There's so much cool stuff going on that I'm mildly stressed and very excited at the same time. (Also in March, I have a ticket to see ban.do founder Jen Gotch in conversation with Jane Claire Hervey, one of the coolest people I know, about Gotch's new memoir, The Upside of Being Down.)

In between all that #profesh stuff, I also took a couple of days off while my boyfriend, Tim, visited me from Pennsylvania. It was a really nice extended weekend. I took him to some of my favorite Austin places (24Diner, BookPeople, Easy Tiger). We saw a couple of movies (Wild at Heart, The Lodge) at different Drafthouse theaters – his first time at one! And we also spent a lot of time watching movies at home. We had dinner with friends and drinks with even more friends and just enjoyed each other's company. I don't need to add my voice to the chorus that's already sang that long-distance relationships can be hard, but they also make the time together even sweeter. As cheesy as it sounds, I can't wait for our next long weekend.

Which will be in June! I'll be flying to Philadelphia the first week of June to spend a couple of days on Tim's turf. I'm very excited to go to a new state and experience what it has to offer, including but not limited to 80-degree June days.

In addition to my usual new watches, I've also been rewatching some films lately. Tim and I have been watching some of our favorite movies together, so that's part of it, but I've also recently rewatched a couple I saw once a while ago just to see if I connect any differently to them. I liked Obvious Child even more and Black Swan a little less.

For Galentine's Day, Maggie gave me a mini bouquet and I've really enjoyed having them to look at on my dining room table. Maybe I'll become a fresh flowers person now that I have somewhere proper to put them.

Some things I'm into lately: my Winter 2019/2020 playlist and the fact that it's time to start a Spring one; blueberry bagels and blueberry tea; Wick Wish Candle Company candles; Dogfish Head's SuperEIGHT, which, in addition to being delicious, can apparently develop Kodak's Super 8 film.
